How Is Inner Peace Connected to Happiness?
First, you need to understand the difference between happiness and pleasure.
Pleasure is a sensation brought about by external conditions.
Pleasure often involves one or more of the five senses.
We might experience pleasure when watching a good movie, enjoying a social gathering with friends, eating a delicious meal, or enjoying a hot tub. In all these examples, the source of pleasure is external.
Happiness is different.
Happiness arises from within you, and often, does not depend on the five senses.
Happiness is a feeling of joy and freedom.
We experience happiness as a sense of relief, freedom and joy, which appears after solving a problem, finishing a difficult task, achieving a goal, or getting something that we wanted for a long time.
We also experience happiness when a burden lifts off, a danger or fear disappear, and of course, when we are in love.
For example:
You study for an exam, or prepare yourself for a job interview.
While studying, and while preparing for the job interview, though being diligent and earnest, you might feel a heavy burden of stress, anxiety, and fear of failure.
You might also imagine negative scenarios of failure and disappointment.
How do you feel when you pass the exam, or when you are notified that you have received the new job?
You experience a sense of relief and inner peace, because all the negative feelings of worries and fears vanish. You feel as if a heavy weight has been lifted of your shoulders.
This amazing feeling comes from within, and makes you happy and joyous.
The sense of relief from stress and from the negative thoughts and feelings, makes the mind quiet and still for a while. For a while, there are no disturbing thoughts to bother your mind.
This sense of peacefulness is inner peace and happiness.
